How to: Create a Macramé Hanging Planter

Posted by Jessica Walton on 26th Feb 2018

The bright colours of the twine over the basic white planter creates an eye catching piece that will pair perfectly with any greenery placed inside. So why not have a go yourself and make something that is surprisingly easy as well as a practical storage solution for any hanging plants or ones that are over-growing the shelf?

What you will need:
Pot and Plant
Two Colours of Hessian String - 18 meters each colour

Step One:
Measure out the length of twine at 1.5 meters each, 12 red and 12 purple will be needed to create this Macramé hanging planter. This means there will be the correct amount of lengths for the pattern that will be created, now tie all of these lengths together.

Step Two:
Separate these lengths into sections of 6, these need to be 3 of red and 3 of purple to ensure that the pattern is also colour co-ordinated. Then knot these sections about an inch from the original knot.

Step Three:
Next, separate each of the tied sections in half making sure that one of a colour and two of the other is included in the section. Then tie these halves with the half section next to it and knot these about two inches from the knot tied in the previous step.

Continue this method of knotting the twine in sections making sure to use halves that have one of a colour and two of the other until the planter is covered and sits in the Macramé pattern nicely.

Step Four:
Now you will need to plait the lengths which will be easy as there is the correct amount of twine lengths to create the plaits.

The last thing that needs to be done, is tying all of the twine together to create a feature that the hanging planter can be hung from. This will need to be about 10 inches from where the plaits end to ensure there is enough room for the planter to hung nicely with a plant inside.

So bring a little colour and texture to your home decor with this Macramé hanging planter! With this craft being so easy to make, there is chance to get really creative and try different colours and materials to achieve a mixture of textures.
