Interview with Kathryn Delve

Posted by George Worman on 18th Jul 2018

Recently, we caught up with Kathryn Delve of Kathryn Delve Florist for a quick interview about the creative and exciting life she leads as a florist and a teacher. We thought it would be a great idea to ask Kathryn some questions about her thoughts on the industry and how she got into floristry, and shine a spotlight on this fantastic florist.

How long have you been a florist for?

I started out on my floristry journey 15 years ago with a beginners floristry course at Weston Super Mare college, and whilst working part time in Banking, I volunteered to help in my local florist shop for some work experience and my journey continued from there.

What got you into floristry?

I’ve always had an interest in floristry and from a young age I can remember helping my mother with her flower arranging which distilled in me an interest in floristry. However, during maternity leave as a bank manager I attended a floristry course which is where it all started to take off for me.

Do you have any favourite styles?

I love European contemporary and rustic themes and sometimes fuse the two. However, the current floral trend is for very beautiful English country garden style floral arrangements, a conflict with this minimalistic style, so I rarely get to use it. I do love it when a bride asks for something a bit different.

What are your proudest achievements as a florist?

Receiving my higher national diploma in floristry in 2016 was an honour and I was blown away to have won best florist in Somerset in the Muddy Stilettos awards last year. In 2017 I was involved in the flower festival at Poltimore House where myself and many other talented people created a wide range of floral designs and sculptures throughout the house. It was a truly unique experience that I will never forget. Also, demonstrating in America for AIFD (American Institute of Floral Design) was a highlight.

How long have you been teaching?

In 2014 I started working as a teacher for the British Academy of Floral Art.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching?

I love seeing the progression of my student’s skills from beginner to advanced. Working for the British Academy of floral art itself is an amazing and rewarding experience, as there are a diverse range of things to be involved in. Every day is different!

Any current or future projects that you are excited for?

I’d like to compete in the RHS Chelsea florist of the year competition at some point and complete my British master florist qualification Level 5, in the next few years.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a florist and do you have any tips for budding florists?

As a result of my background in banking, I think the business side of floristry is so important. I see so many florists not charging properly as they question whether the price is too high for the customer.

My advice - Have a good cash flow and business plan, keep them relevant and up to date.

It's always interesting to hear from florists in the industry and we would like to thank Kathryn for taking the time to share her thoughts and experiences with us.
